En 1800 est créée la Banque de France, sous le gouvernement de Napoléon Bonaparte,
Le franc est appelé Franc germinal
À partir de 1928, c'est le Franc Poincaré qui fait son apparition et remplace le précédent : 1 Franc Poincaré vaut 5 Francs Germinal.
Pendant l'Occupation lors de la Seconde guerre mondiale, la France est obligée d'adopter la monnaie établie par le régime de Vichy (la devise a été remplacée par Travail-Famille-Patrie par exemple).
Lors de la Libération, le général de Gaulle a refusé l'utilisation nationale d'une monnaie provenant d'Amérique (le billet-drapeau), et en 1944 fait réapparaître le franc, jus'qu'en 1958.
